8B legends...

Your task (800-900 words, to be completed by Monday 21st October) is below:

How does Zenatti present the themes relating to International Perspectives in her novel, 'A Bottle In The Gaza Sea'?

In you response, you should focus on the themes of a) Death b) War c) International Barriers (in the mind).

The better essays will have a plethora of language techniques AND will explain what Zenatti's purpose is for choosing these techniques.

  1. To Mr Symons,

When do we receive the booklet with the quotes in it as it will help us a lot. And also, does the essay need to be hand written?

    Thank you,

  2. In Zenatti’s ‘A bottle in the Gaza Sea’, she has incorporated the themes of War, Death and International Barriers through the usage of language techniques to emphasise the importance of the said themes for us to consider about while reading the book.
In the book, it is said that Naim was “only just balancing on a tightrope: toppling into the light on one side or, on the other, into the murky darkness where there’s no hope”. Naim has used a metaphor to relate his feelings and thoughts to a tightrope, where there is unpredictability in falling over to either side. He feels this way because of the unpredictability in life during times of war.
Tal, one of the two main protagonists in the book, has outlined that she “wanted to tell him that there were other people who’d had enough of this war on the other side too, people without hate”. Her expressions of sympathy towards Naim’s side of the war has been clearly outlined in her statement and shows that she has “had enough of this war” as much as anyone else, but without the unsolvable conflict of territorial rights between the Israeli and Palestinians, cannot possibly come to a calm solution and truce between the two sides. The theme of War is clearly outlined in her statement and can be related to any wars around the world, where there are people on both sides who just simply “had enough”.
At one point during the book, Naim was concerned for Tal’s safety has there had been a bomb that went off near where Tal was living. “He was worried about me [Tal], like I was for him, a while ago”. Although it has been said through the words of Tal, it immediately tells the reader that Naim has changed his ways from being ignorant to being thoughtful and caring, and really brings out the theme of International Barriers. Whilst there is a literal international barrier between the two states, not even sympathy and concern for a fellow war victim can be blocked off by this psychological international barrier.
Tal at one point had been hit by a blast, and described the feeling she had after the initial knockout. “So death hovered over me again, a bit closer this time, I felt its warm breath pick me up and drop me back down on the pavement”. Tal has vividly described her horrific ordeal through the use of personification, to further emphasise how she felt when she was almost dead. Death is a major theme in her statement and describes what it had been like to be a victim to a bomb blast, another product of war.
In the book, there is a moment where Naim becomes “Tired. Tired of hearing ambulance sirens, angry crowds…and airplanes and helicopters patrolling overhead, tired of hearing radios and televisions on day and night, going on about the dead, the injured, homes that have been destroyed.” Naim has expressed his mood in regards to the amount of the same events that keeps on happening over and over again, hence the repetition of tired. The repetition helps emphasise how much he is fed up with the amount of deaths and noise, and can only hope for some variety in a good way. The theme for his statement is war, and outlines the common outcomes victims of war would have to face every day.
Finally, Naim had wondered off at one point without informing his parents. When he arrived back home later, his “parents were sick with worry and furious when he got home”. To even allow a parent to think such a thought when their son has been out for a few hours only is extraordinary, yet we learn that they are victims of war, and would have every right to worry, as going outside during a war could possibly get the person killed. The theme to this statement is war, and outlines the unpredictability of going out, not knowing whether you would arrive home alive or in pieces.
Zenatti has clearly and cleverly interwoven these quotes and techniques to highlight the three main themes of the book, which are War, Death and International Barriers, and really gives us a sense of appreciation as we take our lives for granted, whilst there are people facing war and death every day in their country.
